How to Deal with Negativity in Nursing

Today I want to talk about something that is close to my heart, and that is about keeping positive and dealing with negativity in Nursing (and in life).

Negativity, LET IT GO!
POSITIVITY, Put it out there!

Have you ever read or heard about the book "The Secret" by Rhonda Byrne?

It's hard not to have heard about it unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past 12 years! The book talks about the law of attraction and the claim that thoughts can change the world directly.

So what you put out into the universe is exactly what you're gonna get back, right?

It's based on the theory called the "Law of Attraction" - the principle that teaches us that "like attracts like".

Sending out POSITIVE thoughts, meaning, thinking positively, and having a positive outlook in life or daily situations will reflect back to you in a -- you guessed it, POSITIVE way!

This is why it is so important, in my opinion, to recognize negative people around you and the impact they can have on you. It's not only your thoughts that can affect you, but other people’s negativity can also be poison as well.

“Always protect your energy”

Stop and think for a while, try to change your outlook. When you feel a pang of negativity, from yourself or from someone else, try to look at it in a different way, a positive way.

God knows I work with people or deal with patients who are negative constantly! I work with a lot of people, my patients, my nurse colleagues, doctors, medical technicians, and a lot more, so at least one of them is bound to spill negative aura in a day. That’s why you shouldn’t base your emotions on others. The important thing is, what you can do to stop being affected. Do YOU and don't worry about the rest.

Everybody has bad days and some handle it better than others. Always practice self-awareness and remind yourself to stay calm and positive. Imagine a magical invisible shield that instantly surrounds you when a negative Nancy is near. Use that shield as armor so you will not be affected by outside forces and it would be much better if you're the one who is going to infect others with your good thoughts.

Remember this mantra:

"Not my circus, not my monkeys"

And if you do get infected with a bad day, or get overwhelmed by a problem, you can use these tips:

1. Always look for the silver lining. Look for something to be grateful for in spite of the ugly thing that happened. There are always blessings and lessons hidden under every problem.

2. Listen to happy and empowering music. Save a playlist for your go-to mood boosters. I don't know how sad you'd still be if you Beyonce asks you "who run the world?"

3. Look for short inspirational clips from Youtube. They have a lot of short interviews with famous people who overcame adversities and they have a lot of good things to say.

4. Watch funny videos, stand-up comedies, cute puppies, or kittens, and you can also save my playlist featuring Nursing Humor!

5. Download Apps for calming sounds and meditation. As little as a 5-minute mediation can improve your daily mood. You don't even need to sit on the floor or light incense sticks. You just have to relax your mind, unclench your jaws and drop your shoulders, close your eyes and notice your inhales and exhales. That's already meditation!

It’s all in the mind people. Always remember that. Be proactive in protecting your energy because whatever lives in your mind will affect your day and all the people around you.

So just give it a go. Try and knock any negative thoughts out of the way and let other peoples' negativity flow off of you.

I promise you, you will feel better than ever if you just let the universe gravitate towards your positive thoughts.

You're welcome :)
