Plan To Achieve Your Goals In Nursing 2019

Plan To Achieve Your Goals In Nursing 2019

You are the captain of your own ship!

As far as New Years Resolutions go, I don't think I've ever upheld any of them, whoops!
I think that's because they've always been something I don't really want to do but something I felt I "ought to do".
I find goal setting a much better way to achieve what I set out to do and this dosen't necessarily have to be at New Year, but it is a great time to start!
I recently read an article online that suggested that Intrinsic goals - ones that reflect our inner selves and our truest aspirations - tend to be those we actually set our minds to achieving. This as opposed to Extrinsic goals which tend to be goals we may go after but we are motivated to achieve them because they're set by other people, the culture or society as a whole.
This is the reason so many New Year Resolutions/goals fizzle out and only a tiny fraction of people achieve them.
One thing I know about goal setting is that YOU MUST WRITE THEM DOWN!
you need to write
1. What your goal is/statement of goal
2. How you will benefit from achieving this goal
3. Possible obstacles
4. Strategies for overcoming obstacles
5. How long it will take you to reach your goal
Once you've written it down you're not just "thinking" about it anymore. It's there for you to be reminded of daily and you'll be more motivated to complete the tasks necessary for your success.
I managed to dig out my goals that I wrote down from 2015 and 2016! I was surprised at how many of my goals I have ticked off not really knowing it. In 2015 (one year into my Nursing career) some of the goals that I wrote down were;
- To become a knowledgeable Nurse
- Be a good cannulator
- Facilitate students/educate
- Be a good Teamleader
Now, I may not be the most knowledgeable Nurse but I am one of the "senior" Nurses at my work because I have been there for quite some time and I do know how things are done there, I regularly Team-lead, I occasionally fill in as a facilitator for the Nursing students after finishing my "Certificate IV in Training and Assessment", I mentor New grads and students and last but not least I have now been accredited to assess other nurses in cannulation.
So, do yourself a favour and write down some goals. It might just be the best thing you do for yourself this year.

Question! Have you ever written down your goals, and did you find it helpful?

2019 is gonna be great, I can feel it in my waters!!!
