How to take the Diaphragm off MDF 777 MD One

Today, I'm gonna take you through in detail my experience on how to take off the MDF 777 stethoscope's diaphragm and non-chill rim, and then I'm gonna compare it to the MDF instructional videos that are available online.

Removing the diaphragm

I watched the MDF instructional video and here’s what I found out:

  1. You have to push the plastic rim on the chestpiece down and away from the diaphragm.
  2. Once the rim is pushed off, start to work your fingers all the way around the chestpiece until it slips down.
  3. You can then easily maneuver the plastic rim off and remove it completely away from the chest piece and remove the diaphragm.

So I tried it myself...

Guess what? Apparently it was so hard to remove!

I found that the plastic was a lot harder than it looks, and I attempted to roll it off like in the video, but it wouldn't budge AT ALL.

I tried to pry it open with my nails, but ended up nearly breaking all of them, and also I found that I may have given it a little, small scratches there, which is not very good.

Then I also actually tried to pry it open with a sharp object (Don’t try this at home), but then I stopped that because I didn't wanna damage the chest piece.

Finally I had to ask for some help from stronger hands, and even then it was difficult to try and remove. Ha! I knew I wasn’t weak.

The plastic wouldn't budge at all, as if it had melted into the chestpiece.

So we tried using a cotton cloth to get a better grip and stop damaging the chestpiece and even still, it was really hard to remove.

But then finally, with lots of sheer force and determination, we got the diaphragm off!

Removing MDF 777 Diaphragm

Putting the diaphragm back on is a different story.

In the MDF instructional video, the lady puts the diaphragm on the plastic non-chill rim and placed it on top of the chestpiece. She then works her fingers all the way around and the diaphragm snaps in place.

When I did it, I put the diaphragm on the edge of the chest piece, and then from there I worked my fingers all the way around until it snapped into place.

It was quite easy and pain-free.

Removing the non-chill rim

In the MDF instructional video, the lady is pushing her fingers down onto the plastic so that it comes off the chest piece completely, and then she pulls it off the chestpiece from there.

I did exactly as she did in her video and I found out that the non-chill rim was much easier to remove. The plastic seemed pretty soft, and I just pushed it all the way down, all the way around, and then I could pull it off the chestpiece.

To put it back on, you just have to do it again in reverse and the non-chill rim will gladly snap back in place. Just put the plastic ring around the chestpiece and pull it up over the edges and work your fingers all the way around until it fits snugly again.

Putting it back on was as easy as removing it.

Now, the reason I wanted to remove the diaphragm is that I wanted to do a thorough clean underneath and all the way in those crevices. And if one day my diaphragm is damaged in any way and I need to change it, now I know how to do it.

In summary, the non-chill rim was easy to remove, and to put back on, no problems there. However the diaphragm was really hard to get off, and the plastic was super hard. Don’t use sharp objects to pry it off though! Or you will scratch your chestpiece or puncture your diaphragm. Just use something to get a better grip on the plastic rim and it will eventually budge.
