Today, I'm going to do a detailed review of the Welch Allyn Adult Professional Stethoscope, “one of the most comfortable and versatile general-use stethoscopes” according to its website. As usual I will review it under ten aspects and score it out five so by the end, it can have a maximum total score of 50 out of 50 stars.

1. Acoustics

I have tried this stethoscope at work and it is a simple stethoscope, it has a single-lumen tubing and in my opinion it just doesn't measure up to other simple stethoscopes that are currently out there in the market. It’s not as loud and clear as other single-lumen stethoscopes I’ve tried. I've given it 2.5/5 stars.

2. Ear Tip Comfort

The ear tips on the Welch Allyn Adult Professional Stethoscope are quite firm and hard. They do not conform to my eardrums as much so it does not fit snug and nicely into my ears. I've given it 1/5 stars.

3. Weight

The weighs 155g, which is roughly 5.5oz. It is close to the ideal weight that I like for a stethoscope. I wear mine around my neck all day and it just doesn't give me any trouble at all. I have given it 4.5/5 stars.

4. Price 

I paid 110 USD for this stethoscope and taking into consideration everything in this review against its value for money. I've given it 3/5 stars.

5. Tubing Length 

The Welch Allyn Adult Professional Stethoscope is 71cm long, which is 28 in. It's a really nice length for a stethoscope. It’s not short that I have to crouch over it’s not too long that it touch the bed or the patient. I've given it 4/5 stars.

6. Tubing Feel

 Now, one thing I immediately notice is that this tubing is quite sticky. When I have it around my neck it gets caught on my skin and my little neck hairs. It’s so sticky that it actually collects little dust particles. For that reason, I have given it 2.5/5 stars.

 7. Stethoscope Design

 Let's talk a little bit about the chest piece. The chest piece is turnable, which is great as that is always what I look for in a stethoscope. However, it does not have a dot indicator so you’d have no idea which side is on unless you tap it with your fingers.

The open bell does come with a non-chill ring, which is good, however, when I look at the adult diaphragm, it just looks a little bit cheap and plasticky. The diaphragm is shiny and has got all my fingerprints all over it. That lets it down for me.

The tubing, as I've already mentioned, is quite sticky, and upon using it the past week it has collected a lot of dust particles and has these little marks and scratches on it. 

Going to the binaurals, it does have a spring tension, but it’s not as tight as the other stethoscopes that I've tried out. I find that when I put them in my ears I don't actually get the snug fit that I would like.

Lastly we have the ear tips, which I've already mentioned are quite hard and do not create that snug fit that you need for great acoustics. Overall, in the stethoscope design I have given it 2/5 stars.

8. Spare Kit

With the Welch Allyn Adult Professional Stethoscope you will get an extra set of hard ear tips, a diaphragm, a name tag, and a user manual. I have given it 2.5/5 stars.

 9. Warranty

 With this stethoscope, you get a five-year warranty and I've given it 4/5 Stars.

10. Buying Experience

All Welch Allyn Adult Professional Stethoscope comes in the same box. It’s a white cardboard box with some Welch Allyn Stethoscope photo in the front. The stethoscope inside is laid inside on a plastic case along with the spare kit. For the money that you pay, over $100, for me personally, I would expect something nicer than it's packaged in. It obviously does not impact the functionality of the stethoscope but I like to include it for a full proper review. I've given it 2/5 stars.

Overall, the Welch Allyn Adult Professional Stethoscope has received a total score of 28 out of 50 stars from me. The positives about this stethoscope for me are the weight of the stethoscope as it is quite nice around my neck and I can wear it all day long and the length of the tubing so that when I do my assessments and my blood pressures, I don't have to crouch over, which is great for my back.

The negative aspects of the stethoscopes for me personally include the fact that it does not have a dot indicator for the active side on the chest piece and that the tubing is sticky and sticks on my neck hair and collects dust easily. Lastly I am also not a fan of the ear tips as they do not create a great seal so it doesn’t make great acoustics that you need.

Who would use this stethoscope? Now this is quite a simple stethoscope and I would recommend it for a student nurse, a CNA, or first entry-level nurse but if you are in cardiology or critical care and you need to assess lung sounds and heart sounds all the time, I would probably take my money and spend it on a better quality stethoscope.
