Littmann Classic III vs Littmann Lightweight II S.E.

Hej Hej, Nurse Jenny Here!

If you are a student Nurse and looking to buy a new stethoscope, this is a great video for you! You thought you only had to choose which is cuter between the Littmann Classic 3 Raspberry Rainbow and The Littmann Classic 3 Chocolate Copper only to find out that there are a hundred Littmann stethoscopes to choose from!

I still remember my first Littmann Classic III. It was green and absolutely wonderful! I take it everywhere with me, my ever trusted stethoscope, until one day, as fate would have it, it got stolen from me when I was floating to another ward.

I was devastated!!!

Heartbroken as I am, I bought another stethoscope. This time I tried buying the Littmann Lightweight II S.E. and boy was I was pleasantly surprised by the acoustics! Not bad at all.
So here I will lay down side by side my comparative review between the Classic III and the Lightweight II S.E. and I’ll let you decide for yourself.

1. Price

The Price of Littmann Classic III vs Littmann Lightweight II S.E.has a big difference and if you are a student Nurse, this might affect your choice. I bought the Littmann Classic III for 100 USD and the Littmann Lightweight II S.E. for 54 USD in Amazon. That’s a lot of Dollars to consider. Does this affect the stethoscope’s quality? Find out more below.

2. Weight

The Littmann Classic III weighs 150g or 5.5oz, around the weight of an Apple and the Littmann Lightweight II S.E.is even lighter at 118g or 4.1oz. This may be due to the fact that it is made from plastic instead of steel. The Littmann Lightweight is the lightest Littmann Stethoscope and this means that if you need to hang it on your neck all day, you don’t have to worry about straining yourself, because you will barely feel it.

3. Acoustics

From my individual reviews for the Littmann Classic III, I gave its acoustics a 4/5 Stars. It is clear and loud even if it only has a single lumen tube. The Littman Lightweight II S.E., on the other hand, had a 3/5 Stars perhaps due to the fact that it is made of plastic and not metal. Still, for its price the quality of the sound is acceptable.

4. Length

The Length of the Littmann Classic III is 71cm or 27in long while the Littmann Lightweight II S.E. weighs 72cm or 28in, the difference is just a short 1 inch.  Personally, I would have loved for them to be a little bit longer so I don’t have to bend too much.

5. Tubing Feel

Now, I’ve tested a lot of stethoscopes so I know that not all stethoscope tubes are made equally. I gave The Littmann Classic III 3.5 Stars because its tubing feels a little sticky. When I put it on my neck, it snags the little hairs on the back of my neck and it sticks to my skin. The Littmann Lightweight II S.E. is a little superior on this aspect because its tubing feels smooth to touch, it doesn’t have that plastic feeling to it and feels velvet smooth on the skin. I gave it a 4/5 Stars in my individual review. Though these stethoscopes have different tube textures, it would still be wise to treat it nicely by putting it inside your stethoscope cases when not in use. Bjorn Hall has beautiful Stethoscope Cases, which are lightweight, ergonomic and stylish. Be sure to take a look at them.

6. Spare Kit

The Littmann Classic III has a spare kit that consists of a small size ear tip, a non-chill rim and a User Manual. The Littmann Lightweight II S.E. on the other hand only has a User Manual included inside its box. Since the bell side is not convertible to a Pediatric Stethoscope, it has no extra parts included.

7. Warranty

The Littmann Classic III has a 5-year warranty written on the box and the Littmann Lightweight II S.E. has a 2-year warranty.  That means, if a material or manufacturing defect occurs during the warranty period, you stethoscope will be repaired free of charge, except in cases of obvious abuse or accidental damage

8. Overall Score

For my individual reviews, I rate stethoscopes 1 to 5 Stars under 10 categories, with a total of 50 Stars as the highest score. Upon reviewing the Littmann Classic III it collected 39/50 Stars while the Littmann Lightweight II S.E. garnered a 33/50 Stars.
