Coffee with Nurse Jenny: Being a Male Nurse! What's it Like?
Hey there, Nurse Jenny here!
Welcome back to my blog.
If it’s your first time here, thank you for visiting and I hope to give you some wonderful insights into the life of nurses. You can also follow Nurse Jenny Facebook Group where we vent, make fun of, and talk about all things nursing.
Today in our blog, we will be talking about the Male Nurses.
More and more men are becoming Nurses nowadays! Historically, nursing has not always been a predominantly female profession. Men mostly made up the numbers of what it was in the time before Florence Nightingale. Before she was considered as the “First Nurse in the World”, sick people go to churches and they were taken care of nuns, monks, and the military.
Nowadays, though there are already a lot of male nurses, Nursing is still somewhat wrongly considered a “feminine job”. That’s why I decided to interview my male colleagues and hear straight from them what it feels like to be a male nurse in a female-dominated industry, what they like in Nursing, and what made them decide to become nurses.
My colleagues Todd & Matt, kindly agreed to take part in one of my videos (thanks guys!). It was a fun and enlightening talk over coffee.
Here are some of the questions I asked them:
- How they got into nursing.
- The reactions they got when they went into nursing school.
- If they were ever treated differently at work by being males.
You can watch our interview here and I hope you enjoy them!:
One of the many reasons I enjoy Nursing so much is the teamwork and the fact that you get to work WITH people. I really like all the people I work with and it's like seeing your friends every day (except you gotta get work done as well).
I had a great chat with Todd & Matt and I'm so grateful that they are my work colleagues and my friends at the same time.

What about you? Do you have any thoughts about male nurses? And if we could hear it from the gentlemen, have you ever been treated differently at work by being a male?
Drop them in the comments below. I would love to hear from you!
Let us all appreciate all the men in Nursing this Nurses week!!
I hope you have a nice shift and remember as always, listen with your heart.
