Littmann Lightweight II S.E. Stethoscope Review
Hello Everyone, Nurse Jenny here!
Here I am again to give you my honest opinion so that you can make an informed choice. Today I will be reviewing the entry-level Littmann Lightweight II S.E. so that you can learn if this is the one for you before you check-out that Littmann online store basket.
I will be giving each stethoscope that I review a score out of 50. And to do that, I will be reviewing 10 different aspects and give them a score out of five in each aspect.
This stethoscope is different from all the other stethoscopes I have reviewed and I will tell you why in a while. The first thing you’ll notice when you hold the stethoscope is that as its name says, it is indeed light. as if you’re holding a toy. But the good ol’ Littmann Lightweight has its own unique strengths. Let’s dig into them!

1. Acoustics
So let's start with the most important thing when it comes to a stethoscope, the acoustics.
Upon using this stethoscope, I learned that the sound isn’t as loud and crisp as the other Littmann Stethoscopes I had reviewed.
Aside from having just a single lumen, the diaphragm is made of plastic as well so those might be the factors affecting the acoustics.
I give it a 3.5/5 Stars.
A three and a half star for the price is in my book, a pretty good rating.
2. Ear Tip Comfort
Now the second most important thing to me is the ear tip comfort, and the Littmann, as always, has got great ear tips.
These ear tips are quite large and soft. They fit really well in the ears, they are comfortable even if you constantly put the stethoscope on and off. They seal out any extra noise that you don't want and it helps to focus the sound straight to your ear canal.
I’ve given the ear tips a 5/5 Stars.
3. Weight
Now when it comes to the weight of this stethoscope, it only weighs 118g or 4.1oz which makes it the lightest stethoscope out there.
If you’re like me and you like putting on your stethoscope around your neck, even if you put on the Littmann Lightweight II S.E. all day, you will barely notice it around you.
For the weight, I have given it 5/5 Stars.
4. Price
The price of the Littmann Lightweight II S.E is $54.00 USD from Amazon. That is a great price being a Littmann and the value for money is worth every dollar.
I'm giving that 5/5 Stars.
Before I continue, you might wonder
“JUST HOW MANY STETHOSCOPES DO YOU HAVE AT HOME NURSE JENNY??”
Well, I have bought a lot of stethoscopes for all my Stethoscope Reviews but they are not at home collecting dust. I do run monthly giveaways, so if you're interested and would like to join, check out my website for the free monthly giveaways.
Let's continue!
5. Tubing Length
So the tubing length of the Littmann Lightweight S.E. is 71cm, which is 28in. For me that is already a nice length for a stethoscope, but it could be just a touch longer to avoid bending too much.
I've given the tubing length 4/5 Stars.
6. Tubing Feel
The tubing feel of the Littmann Lightweight II S.E. quite nice. It is soft and flexible and quite smooth.
Compared to other stethoscopes I have reviewed, It doesn't get sticky as stethoscopes get sometimes. It's nice on your skin around your neck.
I have also cleaned it several times with alcohol wipes, and it's still nice and smooth. Proper caring for your stethoscope is crucial for its well-being. No matter how much you bought yours for, you should always clean and care for your stethoscope correctly.
For the tubing feel, I’ve given it a 4/5 Stars.
7. Stethoscope Design
The stethoscope design of The Littmann Lightweight II S.E. is quite unique.
The chest piece has got this teardrop shape to it, which supposedly fits nicely under the blood pressure cuff or around bandages and things like that.
It is also turnable, which I always look for when choosing a stethoscope, so you can use the diaphragm or the open bell.
Now the open bell does not convert to a pediatric size, so it does not come with a smaller diaphragm to put on there.
The joints at the Y shape feels a little bit plasticky, and it comes apart in the middle. It Doesn’t get yanked off easily, but if you do put a bit of force on it, it would come off.
For this reason, I've given the stethoscope design a 3/5 Stars.
I have a side by side comparison of the Littmann Lightweight II S.E. vs the Littmann Classic III. You might want to check it out and see for yourself.
8. SPARE KIT
The spare kit aspect of this stethoscope is pretty poor.
You actually don't get a spare kit at all, so you don't get any extra ear tips or diaphragms or name tags.
Nothing like that.
And I've given it a 0/5 Stars.
Bjorn Hall Stethoscopes has amazing Spare Kits included in every stethoscope. You might want to take a look.
9. Warranty
The Littmann Lightweight II S.E. has a warranty of two years. If a material or manufacturing defect occurs during the warranty period, It will be repaired free of charge, except in cases of obvious abuse or accidental damage.
I've given it a 2.5/5 Stars.
10. Buying Experience
Now for the buying experience of the Littmann lightweight, I must say I actually received this packaging already damaged.
When I received it in its thin box, it got creases all over it.
The presentation of the stethoscope inside the box was not that great either. It comes just laid in there on top of a single black foam. There's no bells and whistles. It's just a little box and nothing else.
Therefore, I've given the buying experience a 1/5 Stars.
Now this doesn't obviously change the functionality of the actual stethoscope, but I do like to include it just to get an overall feel of the whole product and for you to know what to expect when you receive yours.
Littmann Lightweight II S.E. Overall Review Score: 33/50 Stars!
To Review:
- Acoustics: 3.5 / 5 Stars
- Ear Tip Comfort: 5/5 Stars
- Weight: 5/5 Stars
- Price: 5/5 Stars
- Tubing Length: 4/5 Stars
- Tubing Feel: 4/4 Stars
- Stethoscope Design: 3/5 Stars
- Spare Kit: 0/5 Stars
- Warranty: 2.5/5 Stars
- Buying Experience: 1/5 Stars
So overall, the Littmann lightweight receives a good score of 33 out of 50 stars.
It scored really highly in-ear tip comfort, price, and weight.
And what brought it down was the warranty, the lack of spare kit, and the whole buying experience.
It's also great for anyone who can't stand the weight of a stethoscope at the end of the long day. This is only 118 grams, 4.1 ounces, so you can barely feel it sitting on your neck.
I think the Littmann lightweight is a great nurse entry-level stethoscope or anyone who's looking for a cheapish stethoscope, but don't want to compromise on the acoustics.
